Ready to uncover the secrets of these icy wonders? Let’s talk about the best ice caves in Iceland and how you can explore them safely and memorably.
The Best Ice Caves to Visit in Iceland
Vatnajökull Glacier Caves
The Vatnajökull Glacier, Europe’s largest glacier, is renowned for its spectacular ice caves. These caves are most accessible during the winter months, from November to March, when the ice is most stable. Every year locations change little bit. You can often see names like The Crystal Cave, Sapphire Cave and Blue Diamond Cave. Caves in the Vatnajokull are known for their breathtaking blue ice and dramatic natural formations. Our choice of tour operator for this area is small company called Local Guides of Vatnajokull. We went with them to Ice Caves on Breidamerkurjokull many times and always had best experience.
Langjökull Ice Cave
In last years there were usually two caves on this glacier outlet. First unlike the seasonal caves of Vatnajökull, is a man-made marvel, accessible year-round called Into The Glacier. This cave offers a different kind of experience, with its led lighting and carved walkways, providing insights into the glacial life and the effects of global warming. Second cave it is accessible either by Sleipnir (16wheel drive bus) or Snowmobiles. Unfortunately we didn't have chance to see any of those caves (YET!).
Katla Ice Cave
Located under the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, the Katla ice cave (named after closeby Volcano) is accessible year-round. It's unique because of the contrasting ash layers embedded in the ice, remnants of past volcanic eruptions, which create a mesmerizing pattern of black and translucent ice. We explored Katla with Katlatrack but there is many companies doing tours to this cave (Southcoast Adventure f.e).
